Burning for IF
I had so much fun working on this illustration, partly because I proved to myself that I could do it, and also because it became a family project. Everyone gathered around the kitchen table to draw dragons. I learned a lot.
When the Illustration Friday topic was announced as "Burning", a fire breathing dragon was the first thing that came to mind. It was something I've never tried before and had been wanting to add to my repertoire. I saturated my brain with images of dragons, saw them in my mind as I fell asleep, filled pages and pages of sketchbook paper. Even my son took pity on me and let me borrow his dragon figurines.
When I was restocking at the art supply store I found a book on painting mythical creatures in watercolor. Perfect timing! I followed the author's advice and worked in glazes of color, but eventually my own instinct took over.
I am pleased with the result: my first dragon painting.

Great job! This is a wonderful painting and a great take on the "burning" topic. Reminds me of J.R.R. Tolkien! Keep up the great work and I'd say you should do some more experiments with this technique for sure. :)
I like all the details! Really nice painting!
Sandra! You nailed it! Don’t ignore your own insticts... you gave this a certain midevil quality! Love the detail that you added. really brings out the whole illustration. Fantastic work! Your whole family gets an A+.
You should be very pleased. You immersed yourself in this illustration and your effort really shows. Well done, and congrats to you for getting the family involved in the art process! I hope everyone had fun!
This is stellar! I agree with my friend Jack you certainly nailed this one to the wall. Awesomeness all over the place. Great job!
Having fun while doing this sure shows!
Nice!
Great dragon, came out nice!
This is such an accomplished, complete illustration! Your dragon is so lively and full of character, and your watercolour technique is excellent - you definitely know exactly when to stop applying more colour (something I struggle with). It's heartening to see such a fine, non-digital illustration. There should be more dragons for this topic!
fabulous illo - so well done
